We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new, safe medication for the treatment of chronic arthritis in dogs. Early results in our patients have shown it to be very effective at improving the quality of life for those with severe, debilitating arthritis. Several clients called our office after their dogs received the new medication and expressed how pleased they were to see an obvious improvement in their interest in walks and general well-being. These pets were also currently receiving daily NSAID therapy such as Carprofen.
The drug is called Librela and it consists of anti-nerve growth factor (NGF) monoclonal antibodies in an injection. The mechanism of action is to reduce pain sites in areas of arthritis. This type of medication is at the extreme forefront of pharmaceutical research for arthritis pain control.
The treatment protocol is a monthly injection based on body weight. Reported side effects are rare (we have reported none) and are usually associated with minor inflammation at the injection site. All patients receiving an injection must be current on required lab tests.
As humans who can communicate our discomfort levels, arthritis is a big deal for those afflicted. I am truly excited and optimistic that veterinarians now have another tool besides NSAIDS to alleviate arthritis pain in our beloved canine companions.
